How most homes heat: Electric heat pumps in most homes; gas furnaces in some cities.

Tennessee is heat pump country, helped by TVA electricity. Summers are hot and humid, and winters bring regular freezes, especially in the east. Aux heat settings matter most in winter, and dehumidifying in summer.

Two-story homes often have two systems or a zoned system. Local power companies in the TVA region have offered energy programs and rebates; check yours before upgrading.
