You very likely have a neutral wire

White wires joined together in the back of the box, not touching the switch, are neutrals passing through. A smart switch’s neutral lead connects to that bundle with a short white pigtail.

Before you rely on it, confirm the bundle belongs to the same circuit as the switch: with the switch’s breaker off, a non-contact tester should show no power anywhere in the box. Boxes with switches on two breakers can hold two separate neutral bundles.

Turn off the breaker and confirm with a non-contact voltage tester before touching any wire.

What a neutral looks like in the box

In a box with power passing through, you will usually see several white wires twisted together under a wire nut, pushed to the back, and not touching the switch. That bundle is the neutral. The power-at-the-switch diagram shows it, and the old 2-wire switch loop shows the setup with no neutral.

Why do smart switches need a neutral wire?

A smart switch’s radio needs power even when the light is off. The neutral completes that circuit without sending current through the bulb.

Can I use the ground wire as a neutral?

No. Using the ground as a neutral is a code violation and a shock hazard. Choose a no-neutral smart switch instead.

What color is the neutral wire?

White or gray. A white wire wrapped in black tape or connected to the old switch is being used as a hot, not a neutral.

Can I add a neutral wire to a switch box?

An electrician can run new 14/3 or 14/2 cable to the box. Don’t borrow a neutral from a different circuit.
